Review: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Classics, Vol. 1

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle fans were a bit surprised and disappointed when IDW released “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” Ultimate Collection Vol. 3 as three issues of the Mirage Volume 1 were not in the book.  This still troubles me, though it seems IDW does have plans to release these books as a new book is coming to the shelves today,  “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Classics”, Volume 1.

This is a book of stories by other writers or the back of other books to help preserve the other stories of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.  While I do think this is a great idea, I still personally feel that all of the Mirage Volume 1 books should of kept being released in order in the Ultimate Collection as something people can sit and read in order instead of mixing it up.  This reminds me of the DVD releases for the 4Kids series.  The first season came out all in order, then Season 2 was released with a few episodes out of order.  And when Season 3 came out, they were all out of order.  Now we’re getting that with these books, and that makes me sad.

Now the book itself looks nice with cover artwork from Michael Dooney, keeping up with the feel of all this classic stuff.  They brought Michael in to do the cover.  It’s great to see the Mirage artists still being brought in to work on TMNT.  Inside, you have a cover page that says what the book is followed by the table of content listing each of the stories in this book.  The credits for those stories and their page number.  It’s nicely done and easy to read.  The next page is a note from Kevin Eastman about other writers working with Ninja Turtles.  One more page with just an image of a Turtle on it to give a break between the opening of the box and the first story.

This all looks great and is really well laid out.  There is a wonderful feel to the book and it holds me to want to see where they’re going with it.  Knowing these are reprints of old Turtle stories, it’s exciting to see which ones are here, many of which I have not read in years.

This book starts off with Issue #13 of Mirage Volume 1, “The People’s Choice”, art and story by Michael Dooney.  This is one of the stories that was adapted into a cartoon for the 4Kids TMNT series.  I’m glad to see it’s getting printed in color here, though still disappointed it was not in the Ultimate Collection Volume 3 book, yes not dropping that.   It has the cover then the book, and goes into the next book.

The next book cover is “Shell Shock” a rare book from Mirage Studios from back in the day.  The original book of Shell Shock had 26 stories to it.  This new book by IDW has 10 of those stories, all in order, with skipping through the stories from Shell Shock.  It seems really weird for them to have one normal issue from Mirage Volume 1, mixed in with all of these stories from Shell Shock.

It’s really cool though to see all of these stories in color and I’m thrilled that it’s released for people to read now, with a lot of these stories hard to find in the past.  So I am excited with this new book.  I just do not feel that issue 13 of Mirage really fits here.  I’m curious whose idea it was to lay out the book the way it is and what of the other two issues from Mirage that was skipped in Volume 3?   Curious to see the directions that IDW is taking us.  I guess all that really matters is getting all of them reprinted for new people to read.
